She pulled up to the diner
In a worn out Chevrolet
She stared into the menu
But her eyes were far away

I watched her as she came in
From the muggy Memphis air
In a wrinkled pair of khakis
And her sandy wind blown hair

The car that she'd pulled up in
Was not stranger to the road
A ten year old Impala
And every miles showed

A flat grey coat of primer
Made it look like chiseled stone
And a back seat full of boxes
Carried everything she owned

If I were a braver man I'd sit down by her side
And try to find out what it is she hides behind those eyes
What it is she's running from or why it is she waits
In her primer gray Impala with the Oklahoma plates

She looked like she'd been crying
But tried to change her mood
She drank her cup of coffee
But barely touched her food

I couldn't help but notice
As her left hand touched her chin
A line around her finger
Where a wedding band had been

She paid her check in quarters
After going through her purse
And I watched her get back in her car
And drop it i reverse

And she lingered and I thought she might
Go back the way she came
But she made a sharp right turn and headed
Down the eastbound lane
